The Need for Book News

“We know the top songs on the radio and the movies in theaters. Why don’t we know what books are the latest on the shelves? …

Imagine if books were discarded because of lack of readership. We wouldn’t be left with many books and the ones we would be left with would be “Twilight” fan fiction. “Fifty Shades of Grey,” I’m referring to you. Quality literature and peoples’ interest in it is fading fast.

We have become a society that is focused on watching images on screens instead of allowing images to be formed in our minds from words. In my opinion, it is important to know what is going on in the world in terms of news and pop culture. However, most news doesn’t seem to include books. Many of today’s movies and TV shows are based off of novels, showing the impact they have beyond the literary scope. People may feel weighed down when they read page after page in a book, but without good writers to write screenplays for movies and scripts for TV shows, there wouldn’t be any. The basis for everything stems from the ability to write and to write well. This is why we need to enlighten ourselves and acknowledge the work that is going unnoticed in the book industry.”

Writers and Propaganda

“Richard Lance Keeble in “Hacks and Spooks” writes about the close ties between British and American intelligence agencies and the mass media. The media has always closely cooperated with intelligence agencies in both countries, sharing the same political outlook and goals. The CIA, M15 and M16 have used the mass media to plant stories.

For instance, from 1948-77 M16 operated the information Research Department Office (IRD) where it ran dozens of Fleet Street journalists and news agencies across the globe. The IRD, set up by the Labor government in 1948, spread ” white” (true), “grey” (partially true) and “black” (false) propaganda about the former socialist countries of central Europe as well as “planting smears, lies, false rumors and forged official reports about the Soviet threat in the media”

The CIA ran its own propaganda unit modeled on the IRD during the 1960s called the Forum World Features to feed false information to the public. The Senate’s Church Committee and the House of Representative’s Pike Committee revealed in the 1970s that the CIA had invested large resources in propaganda operations. For instance, the CIA had a secret agreement with the New York Times to employ at least 10 agents as reporters or clerks in foreign bureaus. Feminist writer Gloria Steinem was revealed to be an agent. “The Pike Committee found that 29 per cent of the CIA’s covert operations was directed at ‘media and propaganda,’ meaning that in 1978 the agency had spent in this area as much as the combined budgets of the world’s biggest news agencies (AP, Reuters and UPI) put together” SOURCE

The media serving the power should not be a surprise. The, so called, “news” industry, has always been a target of intelligence agencies, and for obvious reasons: we are the screen generation, consuming everything directed at us. That the media is a willing participant in these propaganda wars might be surprising to some, particularly to the hopeless FOX audience. But it is not only the TV that messes with our perception of the world. Print, including books, are a part of the battlefield. With the slow demise of paper books, that tangible expression of our thought, some worry that the digital books are too prone to manipulation, to changes at will, the 1984-come-true. Hence the growing number voices calling for the preservation of the printed word.

Mass Media on trial

The Institute for Economics and Peace and Media Tenor have released “Measuring Peace in the Media”:

“The results show broad inconsistencies across geographies and networks, with US broadcasters much more focused on violence and conflict than their European and Middle Eastern counterparts. Al Jazeera was found to be the network providing the most balanced coverage on Afghanistan. BBC World led the way when it came to breadth of coverage. …

Positive-peace stories make up just 1.6% of the total number of stories examined in the study.

CNN International, BBC World and Al Jazeera English all had similar number of reports on the topics that received the most total coverage – warfare, elections, crime and international politics.  However, Al Jazeera had the greatest breadth of coverage, including more coverage on topics which related progress in creating peace.”

There is a reason why I do not read or watch corporate media, this dinosaur of oxymoron and opinion. Here are some examples of what lies at the core of today’s mass corporate media: the assumption that recipients of this gibberish are idiots.

Perhaps behind it all is fear, after all if you publish the truth you may face assassination

US Intelligence spending

National Intelligence Director informs:

US spy agencies have spent $49.8 billion in fiscal year 2009, which is $2 billion more than the previous year and the second such multibillion-dollar increase in as many years.

Suuuuuure… as if anyone would believe that the Imperial Intelligence is worth only 4 times what the US food industry blows on junk food advertising alone!

By the way, the first link (to the US intel spending) points to an Iranian news site, which is being blocked by Facebook!

FBI is the Gestapo

Well, it seems J. Edgar Hoover’s prophecy has come true.

Based on recommendation from the FBI a Canadian citizen Maher Arar has been rendered to Syria for torture. Later Arar has been found not guilty of terrorism charges, awarded millions in damages and a court order released documents which show that the FBI insisted on torturing Arar.

What is the significance of the finding?

J. Edgar Hoover warned:

“We are a fact-gathering organization only. We don’t clear anybody. We don’t condemn anybody. Just the minute the FBI begins making recommendations on what should be done with its information, it becomes a Gestapo.”

A priest doesn’t lie

US army intelligence trains torturers, say two priests.

CommonDreams reports: “The two believe the post and its intelligence leadership prepare soldiers to become torturers in a misguided attempt to extract information.”

Gestapo liked to drive pins under their victims nails, but I’m sure we’ve come a long way from such primitive techniques…

The two priests (a Franciscan and a Jesuit) were arrested while protesting US torture schooling at Fort Huachuca last November.

Who killed JFK

In today’s Washington Post:

The “evidence used to rule out a second assassin is fundamentally flawed,” concludes a new article in the Annals of Applied Statistics written by former FBI lab metallurgist William A. Tobin and Texas A&M University researchers Cliff Spiegelman and William D. James.

You know the day is coming when the file on JFK assassination is supposed to be open?

You know what’s in it?

I quote what I’ve been told by an old-timer from the spy world, an intel officer from the WWII and beyond:

“You know what they will find when they open the file on JFK? Nothing. There will be nothing in it.”

Remember this.

Operation Condor

The School of the Americas, a terrorist-training ground based in Fort Benning, is the proud alma mater for tens of thousands of assassins / human rights violators.

SOA’s graduates killed and tortured thousands throughout Latin America. Among the long list of victims were priests, social activists, women and children…

Most of the murderers walk free, many enjoy immunity granted by the various oppressive regimes, some live in luxurious retirement in the USA.

Seeking justice for the victims proves to be a challenge, year after year.

So, an attorney from Uruguay figured there’s got to be a better way than going after every single trigger pusher.

He figured that going after the top honcho, the architect of campaigns of torture and mass murder should yield results.

He requested the extradition of Henry Kissinger…
