Nanabush changes evil spirits into lizards
Nanabush is one of the most important spirits in Ojibway mythology.
Some years ago I had a great opportunity to visit the Peterborough Petroglyphs, holy site of the Algonkians which sparked an article published in a paper. It is a great place, where some 900 Petroglyphs are cut in a giant rock, the Teaching Rock – named so because it actually talks…

In the early ’70s, prior to the days of the glass enclosure over the petroglyphs to protect it from vandalism, acid rain, and natural erosion I had the unique opportunity to experience them with my late partner in a way which can never be done again.
We lived in a cabin in the bush not far away and quietly scaled the fence barrier on a moonlit summer night and barefoot, we gently explored the palpable sanctity of the place. The glyphs glowed in the moonlight beneath a sentinel of trees; ancient rock released the warmth of the sun that it had gathered and held through the day; crickets, frogs, and whip-poor-wills sang their harmonies; incense of reindeer moss and fragrant cedar permeated the night.
We followed a path through the trees to a very small lake which seemed to glow with an underwater turquoise florescence which I was later told was a result of heavy limestone content. When we shed our clothing and swam in it, our bodies were as buoyant as if in salt water and it was warm as a bath. We returned to lay on the radiant warmth of the petroglyphs to dry off and discovered the echoes of gurgling water flowing beneath us through the rock. We were both silenced in reverie by the holiness of the place ~ the entire experience.
I feel so honoured that I was able to receive such a gift from life. Amazing.
Peace,
Jill
